First let's practise telling the story of The Pied Piper that we have been learning all week. If you forget any - look back on previous days to remind yourself of the story.

This is a Warning story and many warning stories have the same parts to it.

Have a look at this plan and see if you write the different parts of the Pied Piper story into the different boxes. We call this boxing up.

Science

Look at the table below and gather the objects (or you could choose some objects of your own!).

Which materials can you squash?

Which materials can you bend?

Which materials can you twist?

Which materials can you stretch?

Let's see how much of the Pied Piper story we have remembered. See previous days for the story if you still need some help.

Now let's finish our writing from yesterday- what might the Pied Piper have written to his Dad about his day in Hamelin? Can you include any words with the suffix -ly (like we have been learning in school)?

Geography

At the end of last lesson we started thinking about human features and physical features (see previous video) can the children name any human or physical features?

Let's learn more about them from this PowerPoint

Now can you sort these pictures into human and physical?

If you finish quickly why don't you split your a sheet of paper in 2 and on one side draw as many human features that you can think of and on the other as many physical features as you can think of.

Maths

Teaching video - adding 2 digit numbers (crossing tens)

Worksheet - adding 2 digit numbers (crossing tens)

English

We will start by recapping what we learned of our Pied Piper story yesterday then continue to learn the rest of our version of the story by heart. Don't forget the actions!

As a short writing activity, the children will pretend to be the Pied Piper, writing to  Dad telling him about what happened in Hamelin. This will probably need to be finished tomorrow. This word mat might help with some spellings.

Science

Think back to last session when we looked at different materials and their properties. Now look at this picture of a house

Can you name all of the materials the house would be made of and write some sentences to explain why the materials you have chosen are the most suitable?

Remember – suitable means the material is right for the job!

Example: Glass is more suitable for the windows because it is transparent and waterproof.

Maths

Teaching Video -  adding tens and ones not crossing tens

Worksheet - adding tens and ones not crossing tens

English

We will start by recapping/summarising the story of The Pied Piper from yesterday.

Then begin to start learning our version of the story by heart, coming up with actions to help remember the words.

It is too much to learn all of this  in one go so once the children have learned a good chunk we will look back at the story starter for our story

"In the quiet town of Hamlin, there was a problem because it was full of rats!"

This isn't our usual way of starting a story but stories can start in lots of different ways - what other story starters do we know? (Once upon a time, One day,........)

Here are a few other story starters that we will display in the classroom - we will look through these and decide which we like best or think about when they might work best.

Geography

We will look at the Ordnance Survey map of Carlton and the surrounding area (photo below) and see what we recognise. We will discuss what an Ordnance Survey map is (detailed map made by the Government) and as it is so detailed they have to use symbols to show things rather than writing words or showing pictures. Using the map, can we find what picture/letters they use to show different features? Ordnance Survey symbols

If time we will begin to discuss which of these are physical features and which are human features What are human and physical features? BBC Bitesize

Homework week beginning 10th January

Here are the words we will be learning to spell at school this week. If you have time it would be great if the children could learn them at home too. The test will be on Friday.

Maths Homework

There is some MyMaths homework on number bonds and doubles for the children to complete. We have been working on number bonds this week but haven't covered double and halves as much so the children may need more help with this.

Before we start our work next week on learning a warning story. I am going to ask the children to write a story (without any help) so I can see what they will need help with throughout the unit.

I would like the story to be about some animals escaping from the zoo. I will explain that in a warning story something goes wrong that needs to be put right and a lesson is learned at the end so it doesn't happen again. So we will talk briefly about why the animals might have escaped - whose fault might it be? Then I will ask the children to write a story about this all on their own. (If this could be emailed to school it will help me to plan for next week)

Science

Lesson 2 - Use of everyday materials

Recap from last lesson - how many different materials can you think of?

This Materials and their uses (clip compilation) - KS1 Science - BBC Bitesize might help to give you some ideas. Now talk about their properties - this mat might help

How many of each material can you find around your home? Use the chart below to go around your home and record a tally each time you see something made of each material. When you have found your totals, see if you can answer the questions.

Which material did you find the most of?

Which material did you find the least of?

Were there any materials you didn’t find at all?

If 2 + 8 = 10 what are the matching subtractions? 10 - ? = ? or 10- ?= ?

If 3 + 7 = 10 what are the matching subtractions? 10 - ? = ? or 10 - ? = ?

If 4 + 7 = 10 what are the matching subtractions? 10 - ? = ? or 10 - ? = ?

Now I would like you to work on your subtractions within 20 on Hit the Button. If you need to, start by putting the first number in your head then counting back on your fingers. Keep going until you start to learn a few by heart or you get quicker.

English

Today we are learning about Adverbs

Can you find the adverbs in the poem from yesterday?

Could you change any of the adverbs? Here are some adverb ideas to help

Now write out your changed poem. It doesn't need to rhyme as not all poems do but you must remember to start on new lines .

Geography

Our new Geography topic is the UK and maps.

We'll start by seeing what we can remember from our last Geography topic.

Can we name the 7 continents of the world?

Can we name the 5 oceans ?

Can we name the countries of the UK and the capital cities?

Where do we live? Country? Continent? Village?

Can we find it on any maps? Do we recognise the names of any places near where we live?

We will look at at Ordnance Survey Maps and see what we can see, beginning to look at the different symbols that are used.

Finally we begin to learn about  Cities, towns and villages

Reading Comprehension

Maths

Today we have been learning how to use empty numberlines to help us with different number bonds. As this is quite difficult to work on at home, why not practice your number bonds to 10, 20 on Hit the Button as well as other additions. Remember if you don't know the answer - put one number in your head and then count on with your fingers. Keep working on these until you can do these in your head.

English

We looked at the poem The day the zoo escaped today.

We enjoyed reading it and acting it out.

We found all the words with the suffix (word ending) "ly", can you find them?

Then we talked about how we could change the animals for other animals who might have escaped from the zoo. We crossed out the animals we wanted to change and wrote the animal neatly above it. You don't have to change all the animals if you don't want to.

Finally we talked about how we knew it was a poem because it wasn't written in full sentences, each line started on a new line and that it rhymed. Then we found the words that rhymed, can you? (They are at the end of some of the lines.)

Science

Our new Science topic is Use of Everyday Materials. We looked around us at and recapped all the different materials things were made of e.g. metal, wood, fabric, plastic, glass. Then we thought about each material's properties using these words. Can you write some sentences about different materials and what they are like. We are particularly learning what transparent and opaque mean.

Homework week beginning 13th December

Here are the words we will be learning to spell at school this week. If you have time it would be great if the children could learn them at home too. The test will be on Friday.

Maths Homework

There is some MyMaths homework based on division which we looked at last week. The children learned to divide by sharing or grouping the objects or counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Other things we have been learning this week:

We finished our Science topic. We have been learning about habitats, micro-habitats and foods chains.

In Art we have been working on our drawing skills. The children are learning about tone, cross-hatching and other shading techniques.

We have been writing information sentences in English, using subheadings to break our information up.

Feel free to ask them about and see if they can show you what they know.

Maths Homework

There is another MyMaths money task set for the children to do. We have started learning about multiplication this week in school so that they have a better understanding of what x means. Feel free to keep working on times tables on TT Rockstars too so that they can begin to see the connection

Other things we have been learning this week:

In RE the children have been learning about what it means to be Jewish and have started looking at Hanukkah which is celebrated next week

In Science we have been sorting and grouping using different tables and diagrams. We sorted pictures  into "living", "never living" and "dead". Then did some research and sorted animals into "carnivores", herbivores" and "omnivores" as part of our learning about foodchains.

In PSHE we had a lovely discussion about friendship and what it means to be a friend

Why don't you ask them all about it and see what they can remember!

Start by recapping what alliteration is e.g. Burglar Bill - what other names could we use alliteration for? Hungry Helen, Lovely Lisa, repeat for other names

The focus of the lesson is to continue to work on improving our descriptions by adding adjectives and conjunctions to our sentences to improve them. In the story we have the repeated sentence "He spotted a nice toothbrush so he put it in his sack." "He spotted a nice tin of beans so he put it in his sack."

Can we pretend we are writing about Burglar Bill going around stealing things but improve the adjectives and maybe the verb to improve the sentences.

e.g. He spied a bright, orange handbag so he shoved it in his sack. He spied a giant, snuggly teddy bear so he shoved it in his sack.

In school, we will discuss how to create good characters in stories, we will talk about how using precise adjectives helps to create pictures in our heads of the different characters. I will show different characters from the books in our familiar book box and discuss precise adjectives for them (not just 1).

We will then move on to looking at the impact verbs can have in a story to create good characters and recap on the verbs (doing words) from the story e.g. slurped, munched, climbed.

We will look through powerful verbs PP and improve the boring verb sentences by choosing better verbs but also adding adjectives, conjunctions, extra detail to make the sentences come alive more.

Here are the words we will be learning to spell at school this week. They are homophones, words that sound the same but have different meanings. If you have time it would be great for the children to learn them at home too. The spelling test will be on Friday.

Maths Homework

This week we have been starting to add and subtract 2 digit numbers however quite a few children weren't confident at adding numbers up to 10 together so the maths games I have chosen encourage the children to get more fluent and confident at this. We encourage them to use fingers or put one number in their head and count on or back if they don't yet know the answer by heart. Ideally they should be working these out quickly or knowing the answers by heart with practice.

Maths Homework

This week we have been learning to add and subtract single digits to numbers up to 100, by putting the largest number in our heads and then either counting on or back.
I have set 2 tasks on My Maths for the children to do linked to what they have been doing at school. (Some children have needed a 100 square to help them, if you google 100 square you will find ones for the children to use to count on or back with)
If your child is eager you can of course continue to work on TT Rockstars and we have been playing on Robot More or Less too as an extra.

Here are the words we will be learning at school this week ( the last set of Y1 tricky words), if you have time it would be great for the children to learn them at home too. The spelling test will be on Friday.

Maths Homework

This week we have been working on learning the addition and subtraction facts that make 10, 20 and 100. To help the children consolidate this please can the children go onto Hit the Button and work on  Number bonds - make 10, make 20 and/or make 100 (tens). I would suggest starting with 10 and then moving onto 20 and 100 when the children are confident with 10, as the children use the numbers bonds to 10 to work out ones to 20 and 100.

Reading

As last week, the children will have a library book to read for pleasure which they need to bring back ready for their Wednesday library session if they want a new one.

On Thursday, the children will bring home the reading book they have read at school plus a Book bag reading book for them to read a few times, before bringing both back to school on Monday.
When reading the Book bag reading book we suggest they read this at least 3 times. The first read allows the child to concentrate on reading the words. The second read allows the child to develop their fluency and speed of reading. The third read allows for the children to understand the story (so feel free to ask questions about the story) and show off their story telling voices when reading.

Homework week beginning 20th September

Here are the words we will be learning at school this week, if you have time it would be great for the children to learn them at home too, there will be a spelling test on Friday

These may seem easy but I want to check the children know these before moving onto Y2 words and other spelling patterns. It also means they can build up confidence

Maths Homework

There are no suitable MyMaths homework again this week so instead can the children play this Ordering game using numbers up to 100 and Helicopter Rescue - Mental Maths for 4 to 8 Year Olds (topmarks.co.uk) to help the children get really fluent at knowing where numbers are compared to each other.
Feel free to also use TT Rockstars. In school we have done some multiplication and division of 10s (the children just learn to add a 0 when multiplying by 10 and take a 0 off when dividing by 10)

Reading homework
The children should have come home on Wednesday with a library book, this is a book they have chosen, to read for pleasure. If they want to change their book, they must bring it in by Wednesday when they go to the library again. If not they can keep the book for 2 or 3 weeks.
Children should also have brought home 2 reading books as they did last year, 1 which they have read at school and 1 they have not, please can the children read these a few times then can these be returned on Monday?

I have just set 10s under the icon garage for the first few weeks then as the weeks go by the children will have the chance to work on 2 and then 5 times tables. This week in Maths we have been recapping counting in 2s, 5s and 10s so you might just need to explain e.g. 2 x 10 means count in tens 2 times (10,20). We will be starting times tables in class this week too. If there are any problems let me know.

Week beginning 26th April

No Spellings to learn this week at home

I am testing the children in school on the Y1 and Y2 exception words to see which they know and which they need to learn and then will create some personalised spelling lists for the children next week

Feel free to use this time to do My Maths homework or Read a book using the SORA app

Usual homework menus are to follow, we are just waiting for confirmation of new teacher email addresses before we send these out so you have somewhere to send work to
