Dear Derwent Class,

What a funny year it has been, I was so looking forward to spending a whole year with you, but it wasn't to be. It might only have been short (for some of you) but what a pleasure it has been to be your teacher. I have no doubt that you will move on to Year 3 or Year 4 and do your very best with whatever is put in front of you. Please enjoy a rest over the summer holidays and return to school in September ready to wow your teacher and friends with all that you can do. Thank you to families too, for all the support they have given, it really is appreciated, it only works if we all work together. Goodbye for now, I can't wait to see you all (if from a distance) in September,

lots and lots of love,

Mrs Burton

Writing

Children should learn to write for different purposes and different audiences but remember if they cannot speak in sentences using good vocabulary they will not be able to write in sentences using good vocabulary. So encourage children to speak in sentences, introduce them to new vocabulary (explaining what it means) and orally rehearse what they are going to write first.
Expose children to new experiences, this has an impact on their writing too.

Peregrines - here is an All About Me message from Mrs Pierce and Mrs Mack who will be working with you and Mrs Longfield in your class next year

Hello, my name is Mrs Pierce and I am a teaching assistant that has worked at school for nearly 12 years. Having established the Community Hub (school library) 4 years ago I also enjoy look after the library, including opening it to the wider community every other Saturday. I am looking forward to the new school year when I will be working in Peregrine Class with Mrs Longfield. I know most of the children who attend our school but it will be great to get to know some of you better. I am also looking forward to welcoming back our toddlers for story time on a Tuesday afternoon.

I enjoy being part of the 'Friends of Carlton Primary School', helping to organise events and raise money to support the pupils of our school and enhance the overall school experience.

I live in Newland (which is just 3 miles from Carlton) and I have family who live in Drax and Carlton, which is great as we are a really close family. I have two children, Dan who is now 16 and going into 6th form and Jess who is 14 and going into year 10 at The Snaith School.  Both my children were pupils at this school and really enjoyed their time here.

When I am not in work I love listening to music and sing. I have been a member of Selby Rock choir for more than 10 years and I thoroughly enjoy our weekly sessions and performances to the public. I also love to go and watch musicals at the theatre and when I get chance I Like to swim and run.

I am looking forward to a rest and some family time over the summer and I am looking forward to working with you in September.

Hello everyone. I am Mrs Mackintosh (or for short Mrs Mack) I am really looking forward to seeing you all and being your HLTA & Teaching Assistant in September!

I know it may feel a little strange to be back in school but don’t worry, we will work as a team to support one another and get through it.

As some of you know, I teach french and art  in school but did you know I love to bake?!

Baking is my preferred pastime at the moment. I bake a variety of cakes and cheesecakes, which the staff and children throughout school will say are quite delicious!
Especially the staff as they are my cake tasters! I’m sure they don’t mind!
I even entered my first competition, the Carlton Fete Bake Off 2020!
I came 1st!
Always have a go, you could surprise yourself - anything is possible!

What is your favourite cake and why?

My love of art began when I was a young child myself and it has grown throughout my adult life. It will be a pleasure to help guide, support and inspire your artistic visions.

Once again, I’m really looking forward to seeing you all in September, keep safe and well.

Ospreys - here is an 'All About Me' message from Mrs Swash who will be working with you and Miss Marshall in class next year

Hello all I am Mrs Swash.  I have lived in Carlton all of my life and attended the same school as you do!

When I am not at school I try to keep fit .  I dabble in a bit of jogging, go cycling around near home or further away in the Dales where it really tests your legs.  Swimming is top on my list though.  I am truly missing it  during lock-down,  as all the swimming pools are closed,  so I have decided to take the plunge and attempt it outdoors in a lake.  The only thing that is worrying me is the fish!  I will let you all know how I get on when we return in September.  Also I love to crochet, draw, paint, bake, listen to music and dance. Spending time with my family is really important to me too. During the summer months we bar-be-que together  or go for long walks and  in the winter months we have pie club, the strange thing is I am generally the host.  Quiet time for me is when I read a good book . I really enjoy autobiographies or history based stories.

It has been quite odd not seeing all your lovely smiling faces at school.   I am really pleased I am your class TA and I also get to work with Miss Marshall , who is a brilliant teacher and so much fun.

I can't wait to see you all again in September, I bet you are all getting so tall now.  Have a busy fun filled safe time over the holidays.  See you soon!

You will also have the pleasure of Mrs Mack once a week too

⭐TT Rockstars
⭐ Hit the Button
⭐ Learning to tell the time

Weekly English Tasks (plus daily reading)

Complete your All About Me writing and send it to your new teacher

⭐Talk to someone at home about all the questions you have about when you return to school next year. Now see if anyone at home can answer any of them. Next write up the questions (using a ? at the end) and you can either email them or bring them to school in September so your teacher can try to answer them in your first week back.

⭐Can you make up a story and use either your new teacher or your school friends as the main characters? First plan out what will happen at the beginning, middle and end (Story Mountain), then explain this to someone at home, finally write the story up.
Ask someone to pick out the words you didn't spell correctly and practice these spellings using the techniques we use at school e.g. pyramid, 1 correct and 1 wrong  - which is which?, cover, write, check or putting the word into a sentence. Ask someone at home to give you a spelling test using these words to see if you know them now.

Weekly Wider Curriculum Tasks

Learn all about your new Class bird, RSPB (A-Z) and show what you have learned in a poster

PSHE - Mrs Whisker has shared some lovely Archie resources looking at different values. These are important discussions and activities to do with the children, especially at the moment

Story: A new traffic light safety system, awarding different colours to countries depending on the number of coronavirus cases there has been announced by the UK government.

Question: Are holidays important?

RE Ongoing Task

We would like you to learn more about the Churches in your local area.
What are they called? How are they the same and how are they different?
Think about why they are special to some people. Talk to people who have been inside to find out more about what is the same and different inside and why that might be.
Can you work out what all or most Churches seem to have?
You could also research 1 or more of the Churches and find about their history
or even do some Art or DT work inspired by them.

Future Peregrines - A message from your future teacher

Hi everyone. I am Mrs Longfield and I am really looking forward to being your class teacher next year.
Last year was a very strange one for lots of you and I know it will have been a long time since some have you have been in a classroom but don't worry I will be there to guide and support you and I am sure you will soon get back into the swing of things.
Me and Mrs Mackintosh on our amazing holiday in Florida.

This will be my 30th year teaching at Carlton and I can't quite believe where that time has gone. I love our school and enjoy living and working in the village.

When I am not teaching I love spending time with my family and friends. We love to get together and have barbecues, meals at home or go to nice restaurants. I love going on holiday and every year we go on a fantastic family trip to Cornwall, Scotland or France. My favourite place in the whole world is St Ives in Cornwall. I like nothing more than to sit on the harbour there with a good book and watch the world go by. What is your favourite place to visit and why?

Other things I like to do are visit the theatre and cinema. I love musicals and have been to London many times to enjoy shows. My favourite has to be Les Miserables. I just love all the songs. Two of my favourite films are The Greatest Showman and Mamma Mia- again because I love the music in them. I even went to see them sat on the beach in the open air last year which was great fun! I love to sing too and am a member of Selby Rock Choir. I have performed at Abbey Road studios- where the Beatles recorded their albums, York Barbican, The NEC in Birmingham, Hyde Park in London and Blackpool tower ballroom to name a few. It's great fun!

When I've got time I also really enjoying reading. There is nothing more relaxing than diving into a good book. I'd love to hear about your favourite films, TV shows books.

I am a Manchester United fan and love to watch all sport both live and on the TV. I will really miss the Olympics this year as I love watching our country compete and cheering them on. What is your favourite sport and do you play in any teams?

My favourite animals are giraffes and I love nothing more than a day out at Yorkshire Wildlife Park where I can sit and watch these fascinating creatures. Do you have a favourite animal? Maybe you could draw or paint me a picture of them.

Because of lockdown we aren't able to have our usual move up mornings where I can get to know you all better. It would be really great if you could create an ALL ABOUT ME info sheet like mine and email it to me. Tell me all about yourself and ask me any questions about next year. I don't want you to be worried about anything so if you want to know something just ask.
You can either email them to me at : mrslongfield2020@carlton-in-snaith.n-yorks.sch.uk or drop them in at school.
I look forward to hearing all about you all and am really excited for next year.
Until then stay safe and have a great summer!
Mrs Longfield x
