History

In History this half term, we are going back to the time we looked at in Autumn Term, we learned that  in 1605 Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament and the King. See if your child can remember anything about the story or the time. What was life like? What clothes did they wear? Did they have electricity? What might houses have been like? How might their lives have differed to ours?

We call this the 17th century - even though the years start with a 16, it is the 17th century.

Look at this Life in the 17th Century PP together and discuss life in the1600s compared to now. In the next few lessons we will start to look at some important events in the 1600s which we can also compare with now. You could draw a timeline to show how long ago the 1600s were compared to now and research important events that happened in the 1700s, 1800s, 1900s, 2000s up until now to help children better understand what people did and did not have in the 1600s.

Do you like the song? What instruments can you hear? What is the style of music?

About the song:
Deep Purple are a British rock band formed in 1968 and they play lots of heavy metal and modern hard rock music. Smoke on the Water is one of their most famous songs and is known for its four-note guitar riff

A riff is a short phrase that is repeated.

Reading

Obviously, it is really important for children to keep developing as readers during these

difficult times, so we wanted to offer our support for you to ensure this continues to

happen throughout this period of home learning.

We have looked into a number of resources and feel that the following could be really

useful:

Oxford Owl

https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/

This website contains a wide range of ebooks for children to read online. It is really easy to

navigate and explore the books by age range.

Free Kids Books

http://freekidsbooks.org/?fbclid=IwAR2P_7wrSF7sRNjT8TMDH49f7rmB-f8ZncXR3FPQ8KfJBVEZOs1hqQVePs

This website contains a range of free children’s ebooks – please open as PDF as they are not

available to view as an online version yet.

BBC Bringing Books to Life

A range of books read by celebrities to engage children in reading.

Audible

https://stories.audible.com/discovery/enterprise-discovery21122356011?ref=adbl_ent_anon_ds_ds_dccs_sbtp-0-1

Audible have a selection of stories that are free to listen to – these are especially great for

evenings, especially on those days where you may have totally run out of the energy

required to read your child a bedtime story! Listening to one of these together may be a

great sleep aid for you both, you never know!

Get Epic!

https://www.getepic.com/

This is a bank of digital books for children – parents can sign up for a free 30 day trial.

Love Reading for Kids

https://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/

A selection of books for children, also with a method to order recommended books that

come packaged directly to your children.

Booklife

https://www.booklife.co.uk/

This has many free resources to download, including ebooks, as well as books that are

available to buy.

BOOKS TO BUY!

The following website is really useful for recommending books that you can order for your

children to read at home:

https://schoolreadinglist.co.uk/category/reading-lists-for-primary-school-pupils/

It is categorized into year groups, and when you click on a book, it then takes you to the

Amazon site, where you can then order it if you wish.

Ebooks are brilliant and mean that you have a whole range of books at the click of a button,

but I’m sure you will agree, there is nothing like receiving a new book and holding it to

read!

We are learning to write information sentences. Here is some information about the Gunpowder Plot, Gunpowder Plot Comprehension which we have been learning about in History. Read the information and then have a go at answering the questions.

Now write some information sentences in your homework book giving some information about the Gunpowder Plot and Bonfire Night. Please remember capital letters at the beginning of sentences and full stops at the end of sentences.

We are learning to use generalisers in our information sentences. Read the PowerPoint and practise using generalisers in your sentences. Generalisers Powerpoint

We are working on making sure our sentences start with capital letters and end with full stops. Some of us have forgotten some of our capital letters so we are going to be working on our handwriting and letter formation to make sure our tall letter and capital letters stand tall and our small and low letters are clear. Remind yourself of all the capitals  Capital letters handwriting then practise these in your homework book on our lines.

In school we have been talking about girls and boys and how we are all different. All girls are not the same. All boys are not the same. We should not think all boys should be one way and all girls should be one way. Think about how different you are. Celebrate being different. Think of some things you like that not many other girls or boys do.

We are learning about what it means to be Jewish. Today we are looking at a mezuzah. Find out what a mezuzah is and why Jewish people have them. (See below) Can you write a message to yourself that you could look at each day to make you feel happy and safe? Write in on a piece of paper and then roll it up like a scroll.
