Children who are in Mrs Stones and my group, I have videoed my first reading lesson from school for you to watch Part 1Part 2 Book to read  Part 3 . I will video a second one focussing on comprehension for the beginning of next week.

Children who are in Mrs Pemberton's group, I have videoed a lesson for you to watch Save the Whale Reading Lesson 1 ,then please read Save the Whale (you will need to register with Oxford Owl but there is no fee - any problems let me know and I can try and video the book on screen for you to read) I will video a second lesson focussing on comprehension for the beginning of next week.

At school we read books 3 times over the week. The first time simply to learn how to read the words, the second time to develop expression and fluency and the third time to develop comprehension and understanding so the children can answer questions about the book by the final read.

I have been really pleased with the instructions that have been sent to me this week. You are all using imperative verbs.

For today I have some instructions for you to read and unjumble on how to make a sandwich. Look at each instruction, read the words, try and spot the imperative verbs (and capital letter) and then can you unjumble the words, then rewrite each instruction so they make sense.

Wider Curriculum

Science - use of everyday materials

Look out of your window or in your garden or as you take your exercise, make a list of what materials you can see. Then think about what the materials are being used for? (e.g. wood is being used for a fence) Recording sheet - What different materials are used for Finally, think about and discuss, why that material is being used for that purpose?

Art (Just for fun - if it snows)

If there's enough snow, use the snow to see what you can make.

A snowman is too easy - can you make a snow pig?

Rather than a snowball, can you make a snow sausage?

Be imaginative - what can you mould the snow into?

I can't wait to see the photos

If there isn't enough snow - why not create a snowy picture?

Homework Menu - if it doesn't snow choose something from our homework menu to do instead.

The homework menu isn't extra work to do - each week it will be given as one of the afternoon tasks for you to choose from

Children should try to be active for an hour a day. Discuss hobbies, walking to school, playtimes, lunchtimes and our daily mile which all help towards our 1 hour a day. What else could they do to improve our physical health? Perhaps set a new year resolution.

PE - Dance

Children should be encouraged to match their movement to music, listening to the slow or faster pace and reflecting that in their movement.

You could chose a dance lesson on Youtube or just choose your favourite singer and move to their songs. As always children should warm up beforehand and cool down afterwards.

Science - Use of Everyday Materials

Firstly what materials can the children think of? List them e.g. plastic, fabric etc Now can they find something around the house which is made from that material? Can they find more than one? What have they found most of around the house? Can they start to think about why that might be?

Bitesize - Materials (recap)

P.E - Bat and Ball Skills

Encourage the children to always start by warming their bodies up.

Start by throwing and catching - using different sized items and from different distances. What are the different ways we throw and why? (e.g. under arm, over arm)

When confident choose an object that is light enough for the child to bat back using their hand. Children need to think about where they aim and how hard or soft to bat it so that it can be caught. This can be made harder or easier by varying the objects and distance as before.

Children should be encouraged to cool down after any exercise and talk about why this is important.

English

As we start our unit on Instructions, I would like the children to think about how they might teach somebody how to wash their hands properly. Think about what order they need to be in and giving enough detail so they understand exactly what to do. Children might want to say practise these orally before having a go at writing them. Over the week we will look at different aspects of instructions. This is a starting task to see what children already know about how to write instructions so not too much help should be given. Once I have seen the children's starting points I will plan the rest of the week accordingly.

Spellings for this week - contractions

In school we will be learning what contractions are How to use apostrophes for contractions and playing some spelling games to help us to learn how to spell them.

Finish it game - I will write the words from our spellings with 1 or 2 letters missing on the board - what letters are missing? (make it easy on the first day)

Children need to continue to work on the fluency of their typing. In school the children are independently logging on to the computer, opening Word, finding the document they saved last week and again writing the sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." (this includes all letters plus a full stop, spaces and capitals). This week we will be looking at how to insert pictures into their document and change the size and position of the picture plus recapping what we did last week with inserting shapes and filling them.

In our second Computing session we made the insides for our Christmas cards. The children learned how to change the layout to landscape, change the margins, centre their writing and then insert a picture. Finally we printed out their work ready for their Christmas cards

We are learning to write information sentences. Here is some information about the Gunpowder Plot, Gunpowder Plot Comprehension which we have been learning about in History. Read the information and then have a go at answering the questions.

Now write some information sentences in your homework book giving some information about the Gunpowder Plot and Bonfire Night. Please remember capital letters at the beginning of sentences and full stops at the end of sentences.

We are learning to use generalisers in our information sentences. Read the PowerPoint and practise using generalisers in your sentences. Generalisers Powerpoint

We are working on making sure our sentences start with capital letters and end with full stops. Some of us have forgotten some of our capital letters so we are going to be working on our handwriting and letter formation to make sure our tall letter and capital letters stand tall and our small and low letters are clear. Remind yourself of all the capitals  Capital letters handwriting then practise these in your homework book on our lines.

History

Look at the pictures and look at the statements. You need to be a Historian and work out which pictures prove the statements to be true as we always need evidence before we can believe anything.

Alice has been busy this week. Here she is looking at a map of the world and she has also been working on her typing skills. She wrote me a lovely letter telling me all about her week.

Fancy doing something a little different?

Miss Craven has shared  with teachers some origami she has been doing with her Y6 class.
If you fancy doing some too here is one a little easier for you to have a go at.
You will need to show some determination and perseverance to succeed.
I'd love to see what you make

Anyone for yoga?

Why don't you have a go at some yoga today?
I've had a go and it's lots of fun and really good to improve posture, balance, focus plus lots more

Has your child used Hit the Button recently?
It's a great website for children aged 5-11 to help them to learn those all important number facts that so much of their Maths work is based upon.
  • They can start by learning the number facts which make 10, then move on to making 20 or 100.
  • Also the children need to learn by heart doubling and halving facts for different numbers.
  • This website also allows the children to work on individual or mixed times tables. Both multiplication and division. Feel free to make this part of the children's daily routine whilst off school, it's fun and can only help their mental recall.

Phonics Recap

In class we have been recapping the Set 2 sounds.
The children did well remembering the sounds, they could mostly blend the sounds together to read the words but needed work when moving on to reading the words speedily (without overt sounding) which is the next step.
Here are the sounds Set 2 and 3 Speed Sound Book
Please encourage your child to tell you the sound, blend the sound to read the word but then move on to being able to read the words speedily without the need for sounding out. This is where the fluency with their reading will improve.

Home Learning Tasks

Maths
Wider Curriculum
  • Geography – Look at some different world maps – can your child find where we live? Discuss this being called the UK. Tell the children the world is split into 7 continents and has 5 oceans – can they find them on the maps and begin to learn their names?
  • Computing - Algorithms - Hand washing remains important so challenge your child to write a set of instructions,  an algorithm, for how to wash their hands thoroughly. They could create this as a poster  for the classroom or a postcard for home. Can they follow the instructions?  Are the instructions precise enough? Test and debug their algorithms by following them
  • Computing - Word Processing - Typing
  • Art - sketching (light and dark)

In Art last week, we began to look at how to create light and dark lines by changing the way we held our pencils. Show your child the grids below to show we can also create light and dark by the amount of lines and space. Can they do the same? Can they think of something they might draw where this technique might be useful?
