Week 2 English Tasks (plus daily reading)

(These are 2 week units of work. There are a number of tasks to complete so please don't feel you need to rush these, these will be the English Tasks for next week too)

Spellings - suffix '-ness'

Use the grid above to create words. What do they think will happen to the words ending in y when the suffix -ness is added to the end of the word? Ask them to think back to when they added other suffixes to words ending in ‘y’, for example, copy, copier; happy, happily, happier, happiest.  (y changes to i) Discuss what the words mean. Explain the suffix ‘-ness’ changes an adjective to a noun and means ‘the state of being’, for example, the state of being happy or sad. Children to write these in a list and learn them using techniques from school e.g. pyramids, in sentences, wrong and right spellings

Art - Last week l Iooked at some pieces of work by the artist L.S. Lowry.

French - Mrs Mackintosh has set you some French to do:
Hello everyone, can you please revise your greetings in French with the people you live with.

Question:  Are video games the next best thing to our real lives?

🌟Mrs Burton's Ongoing Project - Who is your hero?🌟
When I was in primary school I did a project all about my hero. It took me weeks! I learned lots of facts, made a booklet, drew and cut out pictures, and I can still remember facts about Gary Winston Lineker now! So it's your turn, choose someone who you admire, learn all about them, then show what you know in whatever way you want e.g scrapbook, PowerPoint, poster. This should be a project you work on over the next few weeks rather than complete in 1 session.

Poster about the Queen

If you want some ideas about how you can show what you have been learning just look at the poster Zach has made.
I love how he has worked so hard on each piece of work and then has put it together in such a creative way. His writing is so clear and easy to read.
 I am really impressed.
I hope this will inspire others to take just as much pride in the work that they are producing.

Thank you for all the emails you've been sending me showing all your work.

Bobby emailed me yesterday to show me how improved his writing is and he has promised to keep up the work so we can put some on the blog.

Ethan emailed me and showed me the maths and story writing he has been doing. I loved reading his pirate story.

Here's Ruby, in all her sparkles, working on her spellings.
Thank you for the great attitudes you are showing to working at home. I'm so proud of you all!

I have really enjoyed all the emails I have received this week. I miss you all so much but when I hear what you've been up to or see your photos, it makes me smile. Here is Lauren, who I got to see earlier in the week, she has been busy showing her appreciation for the NHS. Look carefully at how she made the letters, she has been really using her computing skills.

If you haven't sent me an email yet, I'd love to hear from you!
 (mrsburton2020@carlton-in-snaith.n-yorks.sch.uk)
Let me know what you've been up to and if you send me a photo I will put it on the blog so all your friends can see how well you are doing too!

Zach's writing

Look at how hard Zach is working on his handwriting and presentation!
Zach always has brilliant ideas when he is writing but sometimes he forgets to show his beautiful letter formation. Now he is 7 his handwriting is beautiful. I bet he could be a handwriting teacher to his younger brother now! I can't wait to see more writing when you do it Zach!

Joshua's Art

Just look at the wonderful observational drawing Joshua has done.

I know he took his time and really looked carefully at the plants he was drawing.
What great patience and perseverance shown!

Reslience

I have really enjoyed hearing about the work some children have been doing at home.
Here are Eve and Zach showing off their Maths skills.

It's not just been Maths, Eve and Pippa have also sent me wonderful pieces of writing they have done. I am particularly impressed with the resilience being shown, children keeping going even when they find it difficult and look at that proud face. Great attitudes! And don't forget if you need me I am here to help with anything or give tips on how to improve things. Just email and as long as I'm not at school I'll try to get straight back to you!

Easter Holiday Work

We suggest that over this 2 week period each child does the following :
  • Daily physical activity (keeping safe and follow social distancing guidelines)
  • Keeping  a journal (5 or 6 interesting, extended sentences). Taking photos of any games, tasks they do, writing a few sentences/ paragraphs about their day etc.
  • Daily reading – solo reading,  being read to, reading to someone, audiobook,
  • Practising timetables (e.g. TT rockstars)
  • Visits to the class and school blogs – adding comments to existing posts and accessing links to other recommended websites from the links on these pages.
  • Household chores and jobs
  • Enjoy some downtime and free play
  • Writes letter, make calls, zoom/skpye/facetime  etc. to friends and family members – virtual social contact is important for us all!
We will not be setting any further work over the 2 week ‘Easter Holiday’, but of course you can continue to exhaust the home learning packs and previous homework menu if you wish.
After Easter/ from Monday 20th April  we will be then sending some further tasks out for children to complete at home.
Please note that during the Easter period I am advising staff to also have some quiet time with their families and loved ones (other than on duty in school, when we are opening for children of key /frontline workers). Therefore email correspondence  and blog posts may well not be responded to until 20th April.
Mr Watson

What a busy bee Zach has been. Here are a couple of photos showing him collaborating with others in his family.
Zach and his family have been thinking about other people in Carlton who are isolating in their houses and they have been doing lots of things to make others smile and realise they are not alone. Well done boys!

Egg Decorating

We couldn't let Easter go by without asking you to show us your egg decorating skills.
So, for your final challenge before the holidays we would like you to decorate an egg, just for fun. It's not a competition, just have some fun with it.
If you would like to share your eggs with us, email your photos to us and after the holidays we will put the photos onto the class blog for you all to see.

Pippa does Countdown

What a great job Pippa did with the Countdown Challenge. She found loads of different totals and really challenged herself with the calculations that she did. Well done Pippa.

Collaboration

Bobby has been painting with his little sister as well as doing lots of other things.
It's so lovely to see pictures of you sharing and helping each other.
I wonder if anyone else has been collaborating with their family members. I'd love to see more photos.
Either add them to the blog or email them to me at mrsburton2020@carlton-in-snaith.n-yorks.sch.uk

Mrs Burton's totals for Countdown

2 x 5 = 10
10 x 10 = 100
100 + 1 = 101

1 + 2 = 3
3 x 5 = 15
15 + 10 = 25

2 + 5 = 7
7 + 10 = 17
17 + 1 = 18

10 - 1 = 9
9 x 5 = 45
45 + 2 = 47

10 divided by 2 = 5
5 x 5 = 25
25 - 1 = 24

Did you get these? Are there any more totals you could make?

Today's challenge - Can you carry on the story?

Story starter!

These two superheroes had had a lifetime of saving lives. Day after day, they had battled the streets fighting crime and protecting innocent people from the clutches of evil
Now, their lives were slightly less busy, as they left saving the world to younger superheroes. However, they still had the energy for one last mission. The phone began to ring...

Countdown

I'm really enjoying watching Countdown on an afternoon so it got me thinking about how we could play a similar numbers game.

Using the numbers below, how many different totals can you make?
You can add, subtract, multiply or divide.
I'll share the totals I made tomorrow

(You don't have to use all of them)

2   5   10   1
