Let's turn our ideas from yesterday into even more detailed sentences like in the poem

Remember when we wrote instructions we looked at conjunctions to help us to add detail? Let's do the same to improve our ideas from yesterday

my annoying, little brother when he is fast asleep

my soft, cuddly teddy from my grandma

a deep, blue swimming pool with palm trees all around it

Other conjunctions you might use are:

Today I would the children to write their own warning stories using their plans(boxing up) from yesterday. This should be done on lined paper. It would be good for this to be done independently so that I am able to see what the children have learned and are able to do on their own. At school, we give general reminders about neat handwriting, full stops and capital letters and just having a go if they're not sure how to spell something. Then give encouragement to keep on writing, and not to rush throughout the lesson. Please send me their finished work

Listen to the song "I Saw Her Standing There" by The Beatles.

Do you like the song? What instruments can you hear? What is the style of music?

The song is by a rock band called the Beatles, who became very famous in the 1960s. Have a go at creating your own rock band. You will need to come up with a band name and decide which instruments will be played by your band members, then you can draw a picture of your band, a logo, or even your first album cover.

Today I would like the children to plan and 'box up' their own warning story using ideas from yesterday's lesson. Children should also look back at the words from Pandora's box story highlighted yesterday that they said they might want to borrow for their story. Using all of this the children can begin to tell someone at home their story, so they are ready to write it all on their own tomorrow. Encourage them to use the words they will use in their story to get it fixed into their heads before writing tomorrow.

This week is National Storytelling Week

Why don't you have a go at storytelling as a family?

In school we sometimes sit in a circle and ask each child to add a part/sentence of a story to help to create a made up story, the adults help to structure the story. The more you do it the better the children get and understand a story structure.

Or

Why not ask your child to tell you or their brother/sister their favourite story?

Or perhaps mum or dad could make up a story for bedtime?

Here is a link with some more storytelling ideas

Together we will discuss and begin to plan another warning story, using a few words we liked from Pandora's box story. After the lesson I would like the children to read the Pandora's Box story again and highlight any words/phrases/sentences they like which they will use in their own story.

Today I want your child to ensure handwriting is as good as it can be. Here is a booklet where your child can copy the word, making sure their tall, small and low letters are clear.

Handwriting booklet

If you are not able to print this booklet out, feel free to use the pink homework book, your child can copy the words on to lined paper, still making sure the tall letters are tall, the small letters are small and the low letters are low.

Also it is important your child is holding their pencil or pen correctly. I have copied this from Mrs Smith's blog as the expectations are the same no matter what class you are in

Handwriting focus - how to hold a pencil correctly and sit at a table ready to write.

Here is how to help
  1.  Lay the pencil down on the table with the point facing towards you.

  2. Fly your Polly parrot fingers down to the pencil and grip it with your thumb and first finger (do not twist your hand)

  3.  While gripping the pencil with your thumb and first finger pull the pencil towards you until it touches your hand between the finger and thumb - we call this "putting your pencil to bed"

  4. Slide your middle finger under the pencil to support it.

Tuck your finger two fingers under until they touch the palm of your hand.

How to sit correctly at a table when writing. Learning our school terminology.

We use -
  • TNT - Tummy near table
  • BBC - bottom, back, chair
  • 6 legs on the floor - this is your four chair legs, and your two flat feet on the floor

When we write at school we used line guide paper.  All the lines have different names.
They are called:
  • Top broken line
  • Top solid line
  • Bottom solid line
  • Bottom broken line

These letters are small letters and they fit exactly between the two solid lines.

These letters are tall letters and they start from the top broken line and sit on the bottom solid line.

These letters are hanging down letters. They start at the top solid line, or sit between the two solid lines and go down to the bottom broken line.

This letter is the tallest letter. It starts at the top broken line and goes all the way down to the bottom broken line.

There is one letter which the odd one out. A t is a teenager t. It starts half way between the top broken line and the top solid line. It sits on the bottom solid line.

Art

Last lesson you chose one of David Hockney's pieces of art to replicate (make a copy). Show this to the people you live with, what do they think? Ask them what one thing you could do to improve? Take their advice and do a second copy, trying to improve the areas suggested. Compare the 2 pieces of art, talk about how easy or difficult it was, compare it with David Hockney's original. Talk about the things you are proud of in your piece of art.
